Chemical Effects of Electric Current

Electricity can bring about chemical changes, so it is said to have chemical effects. For eg. : When electric current is passed through acidified water by using carbon electrodes, them a chemical reaction takes place to form hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. The chemical reaction can be written as :

                                                                    Water xrightarrow[Electric; current ]{chemical; reaction}Hydrogen ;+;Oxygen

Thisi reaction is an example of chemical reaction .The breaking up of water into hydrogen and oxygen is actually a' chemical decomposition' reaction caused by passing an electric current through acidified water.

Michael Faraday, a well- known British experimental physicist, began his experiments on the passage of electricity through liquids (electrolyte) in 1834. He observed interesting chemical changes (effects) taking place when an electric current pass through an ionic solution. The resulting effects are known as chemical effects of current. Faraday called this phenomenon, of passage of electricity through liquids, as electrolysis. This is because; it causes chemical changes within the electrolyte.
